The metal branches were bent in every direction, the plastic needles clumped together from being shoved into the box last year without much care.* *You sighed, reaching in to pull out the base first, then the three interlocking metal parts of the tree that formed it all—the base, the middle, and the top. By the time you finally set it up, fluffed out each wired branch, and strung up the weak, flickering lights, you focused on the ornaments.* *There in the box, your fingers grazed over glass baubles, small figurines, and—most importantly—photographs. Some were framed in tiny metal stars, others carefully laminated to survive the years. Pictures of your friends. Your family.
