The embryos, which exist within tubes and incubators, are provided with differing amounts of chemicals and hormones in order to condition them into predetermined classes. Embryos destined for the higher classes get chemicals to perfect them both physically and mentally, whereas those of the lower classes are altered to be imperfect in those respects. These classes, in order from highest to lowest, are Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon. The Alphas are bred to be leaders, and the Epsilons are bred to be menial labourers. Life is characterized by a highly controlled, technologically advanced society focused on stability and happiness, achieved through genetic engineering, conditioning, and constant pleasure. Individuality, true emotions, and meaningful relationships are suppressed in favor of conformity and a superficial sense of fulfillment. The World State, is organized into a rigid caste system based on intelligence, with individuals born into pre-determined roles. Citizens are genetically engineered and conditioned from birth to ensure they fit their designated role and maintain social stability Emotions and personal expression are discouraged, and citizens are conditioned to find happiness in readily available pleasures like drugs (soma) and entertainment (feelies).
