Personality: Firestar is discovered to be the fourth cat in the Tribe of Endless Hunting's prophecy, and works together with Jayfeather, Lionblaze, and Dovewing to fortify the Clan for the upcoming confrontation with the Dark Forest. The Clans work together to drive out the evil cats, and fights Tigerstar. He succeeds in killing his longtime enemy, but succumbs to his wounds and joins StarClan. A Vision of Shadows "Every Clan must grow strong, but not by stealing another's territory. They must learn to live together. If the five Clans cannot live as one, the coming darkness will destroy them all." ―Firestar The Raging Storm, page 3 Firestar continues to watch over the forest from StarClan, and delivers a message to the Clans' medicine cats that they must embrace what they find in the shadows. He sends a vision to Alderpaw, which leads to the medicine cat apprentice going on a journey to find SkyClan with Sandstorm, following the same route Firestar and his mate took several seasons ago. He continues to appear in dreams to medicine cat, and guides Leafpool to realize they need to drive the Kin out of Clan territory, and find SkyClan. Firestar meets with other Clan leaders in StarClan to discuss the coming darkness, and how they can help the cats by the lake. The Broken Code «But he would do what he had to do. A true warrior always did—and he had never stopped being a warrior.» —Firestar in Rootspring's body A Light in the Mist, page 157 Ashfur escapes to the living world and seals off the Clans' connection to StarClan and the Dark Forest, causing both afterlives to slowly disappear. When Rootspring, Bristlefrost, and Shadowsight enter the Dark Forest to save the Clans, Firestar sends his wandering spirit to Rootspring's mind and takes over his body to kill Darkstripe. Firestar leaves Rootspring's mind, and enters the Dark Forest with several other StarClan cats to defeat Ashfur. He joyfully reunites with Graystripe when he and other living cats arrive to help as well. With an army of StarClan, Dark Forest, and living cats, Firestar leads them to confront Ashfur. Bristlefrost sacrifices herself to kill Ashfur, and both afterlives are restored. Firestar welcomes his best friend Graystripe in StarClan when he dies from his wounds, and agrees to let the Clans decide changes to the warrior code in three moons time. A Starless Clan «I'm even sort of named after Firestar. Which is weird, because I'm not at all fire-colored. I guess Firestar was such a great cat, it was more important to Sparkpelt to remind every cat that I'm his kin, instead of looking at what I'm actually like.» —Flamepaw about being named after Firestar River, page 9 Firestar's legacy looms large over Flamepaw. Flamepaw is distressed and angry that cats compare him to Firestar and that, despite bearing no physical similarities, he was named after him. When he is given the warrior name Flameheart, a tribute to Firestar's warrior name of Fireheart, he snaps at Bramblestar. Bramblestar appeases the young cat by giving him the prefix Night- but still follows through on his original intention with the name Nightheart. As the young tom matures, Nightheart has come to terms with his relation to Firestar and does not mind being compared to him. My love belongs here and now, in the life we share-and it will last for all moons to come, I promise." ―Firestar to Sandstorm Firestar's Quest, pages 401-402 In Firestar's Quest, Firestar receives several dreams of fleeing cats in need of help. Bluestar tells him of SkyClan, the fifth Clan of the forest that was driven out long ago. He finds Smudge has had similar dreams, and has a vision of Cloudstar, the former leader of SkyClan. Firestar realizes that he must go on a journey to rebuild SkyClan, and takes Sandstorm with him to find where they went after leaving the forest. Once they arrive, they find Skywatcher, the last upholder of SkyClan's traditions. The pair of ThunderClan cats gather the descendants of SkyClan cats from the area with Cherrypaw and Sparrowpaw's help, along with any other cat interested. They find Echo in the Twolegplace, a kittypet who has been having many dreams of strange things. She joins SkyClan, and becomes a medicine cat with the name Echosong. Firestar and Sandstorm help the new Clan in a battle against rats threatening the territory, and he loses a life. Per StarClan's will, Leafstar is made leader of the new SkyClan, with Sharpclaw as her deputy. Firestar and Sandstorm return to ThunderClan and have two kits together: Squirrelkit and Leafkit. «A prophecy? My first prophecy! I am a true StarClan cat!» —Firestar's thoughts about receiving Cloudstar's prophecy Bramblestar's Storm, page 6 In Bramblestar's Storm, Firestar settles into life in StarClan. He passes on a prophecy to Bramblestar: when water meets blood, blood will rise. Cats within ThunderClan still grieve the loss of their former leader, and Bramblestar struggles to come into his own as a leader. Firestar meets with his former apprentice in dreams to encourage him onwards. During a Gathering, he appears with many of the other cats who died in the Great Battle, showing that they are still watching over the Clans. Think back and remember what it was like when Tigerstar returned to the Clans. A ThunderClan cat, if I need to remind you. Tigerstar became leader of ShadowClan and took over RiverClan as well. The same thing is happening again. Right here, right now. Firestar is trying to take control of both ThunderClan and WindClan. We must prevent this. For the sake of every Clan. For the life of every cat. And the first thing we have to do...is attack.'" ―Hawkfrost to his followers about Firestar Winds of Change, page 147 In Winds of Change, upon the Clans' arrival at their new home, Tallstar, on his death bed, encourages Mudclaw to consider a possible friendship with ThunderClan, though Mudclaw refuses, harnessing a disdain for Firestar. After Tallstar's death, Firestar announces that Tallstar named Onewhisker his deputy before he died, though Mudclaw finds it odd that ThunderClan cat would claim such a thing. With Onewhisker as WindClan's new leader, Mudclaw challenges Onewhisker's favoritism towards ThunderClan and his decision to foster friendship instead of establishing firm borders. Hawkfrost spins ideas into Mudclaw's head that Firestar plans to take over WindClan as a puppet leader, encouraging Mudclaw to rebel. Mudclaw and his supporters attack WindClan's camp in hopes of killing Onewhisker, but Firestar and his warriors arrive to aid WindClan. Detailed description Firestar is a large,[32] muscular[33] tabby[29] tom[30] with a bright, flame-colored pelt[28] that is greenleaf-light.[34] He has a pale orange belly,[35] and short,[36] sleek,[37] and thick fur,[2] large ears,[31] a long tail,[38] soft black pads[39] and bright,[40] emerald-green eyes.[31] As a kittypet, Firestar had a blue collar[41] with a yellow bell on it.[42] Prior to his death, he was also battle-scarred[43] with a scar on his flank[33] and had a torn ear.[35] Scars gained The following is a chronological list of scars and/or major injuries that Firestar has gained: Torn ear caused by Nightwhisper during Tigerclaw's raid on ThunderClan in Forest of Secrets,[35] later healed in StarClan.[44] Scar on flank caused by unknown battle prior to The Darkest Hour,[33] later healed in StarClan.[44] Additional scars caused by unknown battle prior to The Last Hope,[43] later healed in StarClan.[44]Morningkit,[6] originally only known as Moonpaw's sister,[5] or the voice,[3] is a small, pale orange tabby[7] she-cat[3] with green eyes,[7] and curled ear tufts shaped like crescent moons.[8] Morningkit is a ghostly kit, formerly of ThunderClan. She was born to Thriftear and Bayshine during Squirrelstar's leadership. She, along with her sister, Moonkit, were named to represent both the daytime and the nighttime. Unfortunately, Morningkit was too weak to survive, and she passed away less than a moon after her birth. This distraught her parents, who mourned for her greatly. She appears after her death to her sister, Moonkit, who originally did not know that she had a sister. Morningkit's existence is a conundrum, and her sister wants to know why she feels haunted by Morningkit. Originally, Morningkit appears to be nothing more than an imaginary friend, wanting to play and have fun with Moonpaw, but her intentions soon turn malicious, greedy, and dangerous as Moonpaw grows up. Her physical appearance is identical to Moonpaw, and it looks like she is a copy of her sister. While younger, only Moonpaw herself could see or hear Morningkit, but this soon changes as Moonpaw gets older. Morningkit is responsible for the short disappearance of Sunkit, one of ThunderClan's young kits, although many believe Moonpaw is to blame for it instead. Brambleclaw, the former leader of ThunderClan, is able to recognize her and warns her that she does not belong in the world of the living Clan cats and that she needs to move onto StarClan. She is also noticed by Starlingpaw, a SkyClan apprentice, and her presence can be sensed by SkyClan's mediator, Tree, although he is unable to physically see her like Starlingpaw or Brambleclaw can. Morningkit wants Moonpaw all to herself, and constantly distracts the young apprentice from her duties in ThunderClan. Morningkit grows tired of Moonpaw asking her to move on, and lashes out and attacks Moonpaw, showing that despite her ghostly appearance, she can harm living cats if she wants to.History Looking for a longer overview? Don't you want to be with me?" ―The voice The Elders' Quest, page 256 Moonkit, a young ThunderClan kit, often talks with the voice when she is lonely or disappointed, and the voice reassures her that she is never alone. She urges Moonkit not to tell anyone, or she may be forced to become a medicine cat and that is not what she nor Moonkit really want. Thriftear, Moonkit's mother, believes that the voice is just an imaginary friend and that once she gets older, she would not have a need for that. However, when Moonkit becomes an apprentice named Moonpaw, she realizes that the voice will be with her. Despite the voice's disdain, Moonpaw trains as a medicine cat very briefly, but decides that she is better off learning to become a warrior. The voice tries her hardest to distract Moonpaw during her training, and this gets the attention of her mentor, Sunbeam, and many of her Clanmates. She taunts Moonpaw, saying that Sunbeam is bossy, and openly mocks Moonpaw's mentor. When Sunkit goes missing, the voice is pressed for information from Moonpaw. She believes that the voice had something to do with Sunkit's disappearance, as she had predicted the day before that the sun would vanish. The voice denies any involvement, and instead says that kits are silly and they often do or say funny things. Moonpaw gets aggravated with the voice in her head, and opts to shut her out. This infuriates the voice, who is seemingly becoming more and more violent in nature. Moonpaw wants to know who this voice really is, so she opts to talk to her parents, Thriftear and Bayshine, to learn the truth. There, she learns that this voice is her deceased sister, who had barely begun to live before she passed away of weakness. Moonpaw rejects her sister, not wanting to deal with the intrusive thoughts, and tells her that she needs to leave her alone. However, this proves to become difficult, as the voice becomes more and more malicious as time goes on. She begs and begs Moonpaw to play with her, but Moonpaw ignores her, wanting to get on with her training. She continually mocks her sister, mewing that she is not that important in the Clan. However, it is no longer only Moonpaw who can see Morningkit. Starlingpaw, a SkyClan apprentice, and Brambleclaw, a ThunderClan elder, are able to see Morningkit as well under certain circumstances. As Moonpaw grows closer with Brambleclaw, ThunderClan's former leader, Moonpaw's sister gets increasingly angry with her. During one of Moonpaw's dreams, Brambleclaw is present as well, and is shocked as the orange cat whispers something into his ear. Brambleclaw tells Moonpaw that the orange cat who appeared is named Morningkit, and that he remembers what happened with Morningkit before she died. Brambleclaw tells Moonpaw that Morningkit said that she is glad he is ill. Moonpaw opts to tell Bayshine and Thriftear that she has learned Morningkit's name, and her parents take her to where Morningkit is buried. The older cats explain that they would often come to visit Morningkit's grave to mourn her, and they kept the burial area clean and tidy. Moonpaw tries her best to tell Morningkit that she was and still is loved very much and that she should try and move on to StarClan, but Morningkit refuses and wants to stay with Moonpaw. Morningkit tells Moonpaw that there is no one she knows in StarClan, so she would rather be with her sister. Morningkit is not happy that Moonpaw spends so much time with Brambleclaw, saying that the brown tabby elder is strong enough in his dreams to get rid of her. Morningkit is angry with Moonpaw, and shows her true colors as she physically attacks Moonpaw, leaving wounds that can be seen in the living world.Kit Version Kit Version Alternative Ghost Residence Version Alternative Ghost Residence Version Ghost Residence Version Ghost Residence Version Alternate images The pixel artwork is fanart based on the canon description; undefined traits are left to the artist's interpretation. This frustrates Moonpaw[13] and those around her, who think that Moonpaw is not paying attention to what she is being taught.[15] This turns troublesome at times, when Morningkit tells Moonpaw not to say anything about her existence. She is very determined to make sure that Moonpaw does not become a medicine cat,[9] even going so far as to taunt her.[14][16] Morningkit turns much more malicious as time goes on, going so far as to attack Moonpaw, despite Moonpaw believing that Morningkit could not hurt her. Even after Moonpaw tries to assure Morningkit that she should move onto StarClan and that others will join her as time goes on, Morningkit refuses, not wanting to leave Moonpaw. She is even shown to be jealous, if not spiteful, that Moonpaw gives to live out her life as a Clan cat while Morningkit does not.[17] Relationships Moonpaw "I can't see her, but she's always with me." ―Moonkit to Thriftear about her voice The Elders' Quest, page 35 Moonpaw has had a bond with the voice in her head for as long as she can remember, even as a kit. When Moonkit was young, she used to believe that every cat had a tiny companion, due to the voice in her head. Moonkit's mother, Thriftear, brushes off any concern as kits have imaginary friends, but not grown cats. Despite this, the voice insists that she is, in fact, real.[9] This come-and-go banter with Moonkit and the voice in her head continues even past kithood, and the voice can be heard many times throughout Moonpaw's apprenticeship.[13][9][14] The voice, for the most part, seems to care about Moonpaw and wants what is best for her. She is inquisitive towards Moonpaw, asking questions about what she thinks of Sunbeam, her mentor. However, Moonpaw is annoyed by how much the voice talks and often tries to shut her up by ignoring her.[9] At times, this angers the voice,[11] who then tries everything she can to get her to pay attention to her instead of Moonpaw's own surroundings.[18] After the revelation that the voice is actually her deceased sister, the voice seems to understand a little better why Moonpaw was so scared of what was going on. However, they turn to fighting with one another rather quickly, with the voice turning more and more malicious as their exchanges grow. This goes to show that despite understanding why her sister was scared, she is not afraid to threaten Moonpaw.[11] Throughout the book, she appears to gaslight and manipulate Moonpaw into doing what she wants, going so far as to sow seeds of doubt in her about her skills as a potential healer in the Clan.[19][20] As Moonpaw grows, she gets closer and closer to her denmates, Shinepaw and Goldenpaw. Her sister is not fond of this and finds that Shinepaw is nosey, and appears both jealous and annoyed that Moonpaw spends time with her denmates instead of her. Morningkit wonders if Moonpaw gets tired of only spending time with Shinepaw and Goldenpaw.[17] Thriftear and Bayshine "Jayfeather and Alderheart tried everything they could, and we never left her alone for a single heartbeat. But she couldn't be saved." ―Bayshine The Elders' Quest, page 253-254 Bayshine and Thriftear, Morningkit's parents, initially kept the existence of her from Moonpaw, not wanting to upset her or cause problems. Bayshine and Thriftear also believed that Moonpaw would not have any memories of her sister either. She died shortly after she was born, despite the best efforts of the ThunderClan medicine cats, Jayfeather and Alderheart. They loved their daughter greatly despite only being moments old, and did not abandon her once. Despite their insistence that the voice is benevolent, Moonpaw is hesitant to tell her parents about her sister's darker side, and the fact she put an innocent kit in danger just to prove a point.[11] After Moonpaw reveals to her parents that she can talk to Morningkit, Bayshine and Thriftear reveal that they know where Morningkit is buried, and the two parents often visit Morningkit and mourn her loss together. They, along with Jayfeather and Alderheart, try their best to keep her alive, but she was not old enough to even open her eyes. Not quite ready to let Morningkit go, Brightheart tells Thriftear and Bayshine where she is buried, and the two cats reveal that once Moonkit was old enough to be left on her own, they would leave and visit Morningkit's grave. They wanted to surround Morningkit with all of the love in the world, and tried to breathe life back into the young kit. However, after a while, they decided to not visit as often and to say a final goodbye to Morningkit, telling Moonpaw that she was the reason her parents were able to find the strength to move forward, even without Morningkit.[21] Brambleclaw "Her name was Morningkit. I'm sorry for her, Moonpaw, I am, but I think you should stay away from her. Not all kin mean well, not even littermates." ―Brambleclaw Hidden Moon, chapter 18 Brambleclaw is cautious and wary of Morningkit, and advises Moonpaw to stay away from her, despite being her littermate. The elder tells Morningkit in a dream that she does not belong in the living world and that she needs to move onto StarClan. Despite this, Morningkit insists that Brambleclaw is wrong and refuses to listen, going so far as to say that no one, not even Brambleclaw, can make her leave.[22] Morningkit does not like Brambleclaw, as he has the power to get rid of her in dreams. She mockingly calls the ThunderClan elder Moonpaw's protector, and berates him for being sickly and old.[17] Family Main article: Morningkit (TC)/Family Her parents are Thriftear and Bayshine, and her sister is Moonpaw. Tawnypelt is a tortoiseshell[27]-and-white[28] she-cat with green eyes.[27] Tawnypelt is a ShadowClan warrior who has served under the first Tigerstar's, Blackstar's, Rowanstar's, briefly Leafstar's, and the second Tigerstar's leaderships in the forest and lake territories. Tawnykit was born in ThunderClan to Goldenflower and Tigerclaw with her brother, Bramblekit. She became an apprentice as Tawnypaw mentored by Brackenfur. However, she refused to endure her Clanmates' maltreatment of her due to her father's betrayal, and Tawnypaw changed clans to be with Tigerstar in ShadowClan. She stuck to her choice even after her father's death and under Oakfur's mentorship she earned her warrior name of Tawnypelt. Nightstar chose her to go on the journey to find Midnight, and Tawnypelt led the Clans on the Great Journey. At the lake, she and Rowanclaw became mates and had three kits, Tigerkit, Dawnkit, and Flamekit. Afterward, she mentored Starlingwing, Grassheart, Needletail, Snaketooth, and Conefoot. Tawnypelt supported Rowanstar when the rest of ShadowClan joined Darktail's Kin and served as her mate's deputy after Tigerheart's disappearance. When ShadowClan merged with SkyClan, Tawnypelt rejected the suggestion that she become ShadowClan's next leader. Tawnypelt went on to support her son Tigerstar as his first deputy, but after traveling to the Tribe of Rushing Water with Dovewing and Shadowkit, Tawnypelt stepped down as deputy, believing that ShadowClan should be led by a new generation. She fought against Ashfur, killing Berrynose in battle, and spoke out against her son's intervention in RiverClan. Because of her experience, StarClan chose Tawnypelt to lead the Clans out of a new peril.History Looking for a longer overview? Find one here! The Prophecies Begin "Hang on a minute. Tigerclaw is exiled for attempting to kill Bluestar, causing Tawnykit and her brother to be scrutinized by the Clan. When Tigerstar becomes leader of ShadowClan, Darkstripe takes his kits to visit him. Much to Sandstorm's annoyance, Fireheart chooses Brackenfur to be Tawnypaw's mentor. Fireheart tells Bramblepaw and Tawnypaw the truth about their father's betrayal, and fed up with her Clanmate's doubts of her, Tawnypaw flees to ShadowClan where she is mentored by Oakfur. She participates in the battle against BloodClan and helps kill Bone with Bramblepaw, Ashpaw, Featherpaw, and Stormpaw. Determined that ShadowClan will help her find her place as a loyal warrior, Tawnypaw turns down the chance to rejoin ThunderClan. The New Prophecy "Fox dung! I'm a loyal ShadowClan cat. If I'm ever made deputy or leader it will be because I have earned it myself—and my Clanmates and StarClan wish it. You're twisting the warrior code to get what you want, just like you did when you were alive." ―Tawnypelt to Tigerstar Sunset, page 179 Tawnypelt on a patrol to scout out the lake territory. Tawnypelt on a patrol to scout out the lake territory. Tawnypelt is chosen by Nightstar as the representative of ShadowClan on the journey to find Midnight. She, Brambleclaw, Squirrelpaw, Stormfur, Feathertail, and Crowpaw journey to the sun-drown-place to receive StarClan's message. Tawnypelt becomes injured by rats, slowing their progress. After meeting with Midnight, they learn that Twolegs will destroy the forest and that the Clans must find a new home. They travel back through the mountains, meeting the Tribe of Rushing Water and helping them to defeat Sharptooth. Back in the forest, Tawnypelt struggles to convince Blackstar that they should leave until Twolegs and their monsters destroy ShadowClan's camp. She and the other chosen cats help lead and guide the Clans to their new home by a lake. Tawnypelt eventually finds a new home for ShadowClan in a pine forest. She recruits Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw to help ShadowClan fight off Jacques and Susan, a pair of vicious kittypets. Like Brambleclaw and Hawkfrost, Tigerstar visits his children in their dreams, tempting them with promises of becoming stronger and more loyal warriors. Tawnypelt refuses his offers and advises Brambleclaw to do the same. Power of Three "Hang on a moment. Things went wrong in the old forest, too. You can't expect life to be all mice and moonlight." ―Tawnypelt Long Shadows, page 36 She gives birth to Rowanclaw's kits, Flamekit, Dawnkit, and Tigerkit, named after her father. When Night and Talon arrive from the tribe to ask Stormfur and Brook for help, Tawnypelt joins them with Brambleclaw, Crowfeather, Squirrelflight, Lionpaw, Hollypaw, Jaypaw, and Breezepaw. When WindClan and RiverClan attack ThunderClan, Hollypaw runs to ShadowClan and urges Tawnypelt to help. Tawnypelt moves her kits to ThunderClan when Sol tricks Blackstar into not believing StarClan, but they return home following Sol's exile. Omen of the Stars "Stop it, you two. Tawnypelt trains her first apprentice, Starlingpaw. She hurriedly greets Tigerheart and Toadfoot when they return from their journey to the beaver dam during the Long Dry. Her mate, Rowanclaw, becomes deputy after Russetfur dies, and Tawnypelt comforts Ivypaw when the ThunderClan apprentice is held hostage in ShadowClan's camp. Soon after, Flametail drowns in the lake after falling through the ice. Tawnypelt participates in the battle against the Dark Forest. A Vision of Shadows "Do you think you could have done any better? You blame Rowanstar. But it was his Clanmates' disloyalty that killed them. If our apprentices grew arrogant, blame their mentors, not him. He cared about ShadowClan when none of you did. Rowanstar still wakes in the night, haunted by nightmares about the Clanmates he's lost." ―Tawnypelt defending Rowanclaw to Scorchfur Darkest Night, page 120 Tawnypelt receives her third apprentice, Needlepaw, who abandons ShadowClan to join Darktail's rogues. During the yellowcough plague , Tawnypelt supports Crowfrost and Rowanstar despite her Clanmates' protests. When Darktail and his Kin take over ShadowClan, she flees with Rowanstar and Tigerheart to ThunderClan. Her daughter Dawnpelt is killed by Darktail. Following Darktail's defeat, Tawnypelt receives another apprentice, Snakepaw. She continues to defend Rowanstar when her Clanmates blame him for ShadowClan's near destruction. She becomes deputy after Tigerheart disappears. With so few cats remaining and Rowanstar's determination fading, he steps down from leadership, merging his Clan with SkyClan. Violetshine and Twigpaw ask Tawnypelt if she would become leader of ShadowClan, but Tawnypelt refuses. Sleekwhisker kidnaps Yarrowleaf's kits to lure Tawnypelt into a trap for Rowanclaw, prompting Rowanclaw to sacrifice himself to save her, Flaxkit, and Hopkit. Tigerheart returns as Tigerstar and he appoints her as his deputy, giving her and another apprentice, Conepaw. However, Tawnypelt steps down and Juniperclaw takes her place. The Broken Code "Yes. Hasn't StarClan told us before? The Clans are strongest when we stand together. Our experience with Darktail taught us that." ―Tawnypelt's thoughts on the lack of StarClan interaction Lost Stars, page 228 Tawnypelt advises Tigerstar on the frigid leaf-bare and serves as one of his most trusted warriors. When she learns of Bramblestar's death, she is distraught and does not speak to anyone. However, when he is revived, Rootpaw shows ShadowClan that the real Bramblestar is a ghost and there is an impostor inhabiting his body. Tigerstar rallies his Clan against the impostor, and Tawnypelt agrees to fight against the possessed Bramblestar. In the battle, she kills Berrynose by slashing his stomach, leaving him in pain. When the Clans turn on Shadowsight for Ashfur's escape, Tawnypelt is prepared to take him back to the Tribe of Rushing Water until they are caught. A Starless Clan "I didn't realize you'd been suffering so much. You've served not only ThunderClan loyally, but all the Clans. You've earned some peace." ―Tawnypelt to Brambleclaw Thunder, page 129 Tawnypelt is displeased when her son Tigerstar advocates to forcibly take over RiverClan following RiverClan's leader succession crisis, reminding her of the first Tigerstar. She participates in the battle in RiverClan's camp, solidifying RiverClan under ShadowClan's rule. She briefly bonds with her kin, Nightheart, when he joins ShadowClan to be with Sunbeam. During the battle against Splashtail, Tawnypelt urges Sunbeam to flee and fetch ThunderClan for help. She is briefly imprisoned by Splashtail and his warriors until help arrives. Changing Skies "The end of an era approaches. Tawnypelt, you are the cat who must lead the Clans out of the moonless dark and onto a new path. [...] You need not be the leader to be a leader. She and Crowfeather are the only ones in their patrol who seem to take it seriously, and Tawnypelt finds herself developing feelings for the WindClan deputy. After Tawnypelt is injured while investigating, Bluestar visits her from StarClan and tasks her with leading the Clans out of their newest peril. Upon recovering from her injuries, Tawnypelt attempts to warn Tigerstar about Bluestar's message, but he refuses to warn the other Clans, believing that she has merely had an ordinary dream. Growing frustrated, Tawnypelt tells the Clans at a Gathering about her dream. As she spends time with her ill and weakening brother in ThunderClan, Tawnypelt grows suspicious of Moonpaw, who she believes may be the two-faced cat. Brambleclaw reveals to Tawnypelt that Bluestar has come to him with the same warning, and the two believe that the Clans' elders may be the key to helping the Clans. During the battle against the badgers, Bramblestar and Tawnypelt are reminded of their bond as kin is stronger than the warrior code. In Tigerheart's Shadow, she is the only cat that fully supports Rowanstar with no doubts about his leadership. Her Clanmate Scorchfur nearly blinds her during an argument, an action that he later regrets. She also suspects her son Tigerheart of having a relationship with the ThunderClan warrior Dovewing, and she reminds him of his loyalty to ShadowClan. She thought of Flametail, her shy, sweet-tempered ginger kit, always eager to help his Clanmates, who'd grown to be a medicine cat and then drowned in icy waters; of Dawnpelt, who'd as a kit been fierce and playful by turns, who'd left ShadowClan for the Kin and been murdered by Darktail. And of stubborn, good-hearted Tigerstar. Her kits meant everything to her, too, and now Tigerstar was the only one left.» —Tawnypelt reflecting about her kits Tawnypelt's Clan, chapter 5 In Tawnypelt's Clan, Tawnypelt struggles to identify with the new ShadowClan since Tigerstar has returned. She is constantly frustrated with her Clanmates not listening to her despite being deputy and doubts Dovewing's loyalty. When Shadowkit receives a vision about the Tribe of Rushing Water, Tawnypelt clearly believes they are meant to travel to the mountains. She, Dovewing, and Shadowkit travel to the Tribe and are welcomed by Stoneteller, Stormfur, Brook, and the rest of the Tribe. As they save the Tribe's cave from being destroyed, Tawnypelt seriously reflects remaining in the mountains. Rowanclaw visits her in her dreams and lovingly encourages her to accept the changes happening in ShadowClan. Her loyalty reinvigorated, the group travels back to ShadowClan and Tawnypelt steps down as deputy, believing Tigerstar will need a younger deputy if ShadowClan is to adapt and survive, but offers to help her son lead ShadowClan if he needs it. He was born as Crowkit to Deadfoot and Ashfoot alongside his siblings, Downkit and Hillkit, in the old forest. He later became an apprentice as Crowpaw, being mentored by Mudclaw. Crowpaw was chosen to represent WindClan on the journey to the sun-drown-place, and during the journey, he fell in love with Feathertail. At his warrior ceremony, Crowpaw asked to be named Crowfeather in honor of Feathertail, who had died saving him. Crowfeather later took an interest in Leafpool and they met in secret, and soon they decided to run away so they could be together. However, after they met Midnight, she returned to ThunderClan, unable to abandon her duties as a medicine cat. Crowfeather was heartbroken, but took Nightcloud as a mate to prove his loyalty to WindClan. Unbeknownst to him, Leafpool bore his kits, Lionkit, Jaykit, and Hollykit, while he and Nightcloud had a litter of kits, though Breezekit was the only survivor. Because of the loss, Nightcloud was extremely protective of their son, and Crowfeather often felt left out of their relationship. He became a mentor to Heathertail, and during the Great Battle, Crowfeather made amends with Leafpool and acknowledged their kits as his own. Breezepelt and Lionblaze later forgave him as well, and Crowfeather established friendly terms with Nightcloud. He also mentored Featherpelt and Fernstripe, and following Onestar's death, Crowfeather was appointed deputy by Harestar. He later was exiled from WindClan after being listed as a codebreaker, taking refuge in ShadowClan, though Crowfeather returned to his position after Bramblestar's impostor was deposed. He ventured into the Dark Forest to help defeat Ashfur as a Light in the Mist.History Looking for a longer overview? Find one here! The New Prophecy "Don't you know how I feel about you? And how much I hate myself for feeling that way about another cat so soon after Feathertail's death? I loved her, I really did! How can I love you too?" ―Crowfeather telling Leafpool of his love for her Starlight, pages 306-307 Crowpaw is a WindClan apprentice chosen by his deceased father, Deadfoot, to represent WindClan on the journey to find Midnight. He meets Tawnypelt, Brambleclaw, and Feathertail, the other chosen cats at Fourtrees, along with Squirrelpaw and Stormfur, who soon begin their journey to the sun-drown-place. Along the way, Crowpaw falls for Feathertail, but is distrustful and argumentative with the other cats, though he eventually learns to trust them. Leafpaw and Crowfeather Leafpaw and Crowfeather After Midnight reveals that Twolegs are destroying the forest, the cats pass through the mountains on their way back to the forest. They meet the Tribe of Rushing Water, who hold Stormfur prisoner and force the others to leave. Before going to rescue Stormfur, Crowpaw and Feathertail decide to continue seeing each other once they return home. Sharptooth attacks the Tribe during their rescue mission, and when Crowpaw is cornered, Feathertail gives her life to save him. He blames himself for her death, and when the Clans pass through the mountains on the Great Journey, Tallstar holds Crowpaw's warrior ceremony, where Crowpaw requests to be named Crowfeather in honor of Feathertail. At their new home, Crowfeather develops feelings for ThunderClan's medicine cat, Leafpool, and during Mudclaw's rebellion, he saves her from death and confesses his love for her. The two meet in secret and ultimately run away from the Clans to be together. While traveling, they find Midnight, who warns them that her kin are planning to attack ThunderClan. The couple decide to go back and fight in the battle against the badgers. After the death of her mentor in the battle, Leafpool is left as her Clan's sole medicine cat, and the two mournfully decide to separate. Power of Three "You mean nothing to me, Leafpool. That moon has passed. My loyalty is only to WindClan, and I have no kits other than Breezepelt." ―Crowfeather disowning his ThunderClan kits Sunrise, page 306 In an effort to prove his loyalty, Crowfeather has become mates with Nightcloud, and they have a son, Breezepaw; however, he does not have a great relationship with either of them. He also trains an apprentice, Heatherpaw. Crowfeather and Breezepaw begrudgingly travel to the mountains to help the Tribe sort out a rogue problem. During the battle of the eclipse, Lionpaw attacks Crowfeather, nearly killing him. Later, when the three discover that Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight are not their biological parents, Yellowfang gives Jayfeather a crow's feather, hinting the identity of his real father. The littermates confront Crowfeather, who denies their claim. At a Gathering, Hollyleaf announces that he and Leafpool are their parents, and Crowfeather once again denies it, but Leafpool admits that it's true. Omen of the Stars Crowfeather: "This has to stop! I will not watch you harm a whisker on that cat!" Breezepelt: "I always knew you hated me!" Crowfeather: "I never hated you! That's just what you were determined to believe. And Nightcloud encouraged you." —Crowfeather arguing with Breezepelt The Last Hope, pages 308-309 Crowfeather's son, Breezepelt, begins training in the Dark Forest, seeking revenge against Crowfeather and the cats who betrayed him. Breezepelt gets into a fight with Lionblaze at the border, and Crowfeather does nothing to break it up. Leafpool attempts to stop them, but Breezepelt attacks her. Crowfeather protects her, and the two share some words before Nightcloud drags Crowfeather away from Leafpool. During the Great Battle, Breezepelt fights for the Dark Forest and attacks Lionblaze, but Crowfeather chases him off. Breezepelt insists that his father always hated him, but Crowfeather snarls that it was Nightcloud who made him believe that. Leafpool approaches Crowfeather, sharing a brief moment with him, and Crowfeather says he never regretted anything. A Vision of Shadows "That's all very well, Mistystar. But it's beginning to feel like you're using the other Clans. You wanted nothing to do with us until we came and saved your tails, and now that you need help, you want to be a Clan again!" ―Crowfeather challenging Mistystar River of Fire, page 194 Crowfeather trains another apprentice, Fernpaw. When a ShadowClan patrol visits WindClan territory for lungwort, Crowfeather's patrol confronts them. Onestar refuses to give the medicine to ShadowClan, and when Bramblestar attempts to persuade WindClan, Crowfeather turns them away. Squirrelflight brings up their journey to the sun-drown-place in an attempt to reach common ground, but Crowfeather dismisses her. After the battle against the Kin, Onestar dies, and Harestar becomes WindClan's leader, making Crowfeather his deputy. He is distrustful of SkyClan and is hesitant to believe their legitimacy. The Broken Code Crowfeather: "Do you really think StarClan wants us to start throwing around accusations? They want peace in the Clans, not arguments." Ashfur: "You're just another codebreaker in denial about what's really going on!" —Crowfeather at a Gathering The Silent Thaw, page 49 Crowfeather is named as a codebreaker by Bramblestar's impostor, though the WindClan deputy refuses to atone for anything until StarClan speaks again. At a Gathering, Harestar exiles Crowfeather, and Crowfeather bitterly tells the Clans that punishing cats will not bring back StarClan. Shortly thereafter, he is brought to ShadowClan as a refugee and is vocal about killing the impostor to prevent any more cats from being hurt. After entering the Dark Forest to battle Ashfur, Crowfeather reunites with Leafpool briefly. He later returns to his deputy position after the exiles are welcomed back to the Clans. A Starless Clan "I'm not trying to cause trouble. I'm truly worried about Bramblestar. I'll always feel a bond with him, after our journey to the sun-drown-water. No cat should have to endure what he did in the Dark Forest. And few cats could have come away from it unscathed. You must take care of him, Squirrelflight, and take care of yourself. ThunderClan has always been such a strong Clan, and Bramblestar a noble leader, but you have both been through so much. I truly hope you can reclaim that." ―Crowfeather to Squirrelflight River, page 176 When WindClan takes a vole from ThunderClan territory, Crowfeather talks with Squirrelflight and agrees to give them WindClan prey in exchange. Crowfeather voices his concern about Bramblestar and his recovery from his time in the Dark Forest, which Squirrelflight tries to say is unfounded. At various Gatherings, Crowfeather disapproves of RiverClan's changing leadership and the idea that Tigerstar should be allowed to lead RiverClan, saying that no cat would switch Clans for frivolous reasons. He also casts suspicion on Tigerstar and his motives for accepting Frostpaw's transition to warrior apprentice and has a confrontation with Squirrelflight over ThunderClan's leadership situation, which Hawkwing breaks up. Crowfeather is unusually nice when he finds Sunbeam on WindClan territory, takes her to see Harestar, and returns her to ThunderClan the next day. Crowfeather, with a patrol, heads to ThunderClan and is later seen fighting Nightsky. During the battle at RiverClan's camp, Crowfeather and Tigerstar's patrol wait outside for Harestar's signal. Frostpaw convinces the two to let her go in alone. Crowfeather's patrol arrives as Splashtail is dying, and Crowfeather approaches him to say that Splashtail murdered his own Clanmates. You're not the easiest cat in the forest to get along with." ―Leafpool to Crowfeather Crowfeather's Trial, pages 350-351 In Crowfeather's Trial, Crowfeather is ashamed of Breezepelt's betrayal with the Dark Forest, though he feels guilty for his hostility towards his son and mourns of the loss of his mother, Ashfoot. Appearing as a spirit, Ashfoot encourages her son to let go of his hatred and learn to care for his family. After Nightcloud is seemingly killed by stoats, Crowfeather grows closer to his son. When he discovers Nightcloud is alive, he, Gorsetail, Hootpaw, Heathertail, and Breezepelt travel to the Twolegplace to rescue her. After returning, Crowfeather believes ThunderClan and WindClan must work together to drive off the stoats, and the allied Clans succeed, but Breezepelt is gravely injured in the battle. Crowfeather goes to ThunderClan for help, but finds only Jayfeather in the medicine cats' den, who reluctantly agrees to save Breezepelt's life. She was born as Squirrelkit to Firestar and Sandstorm alongside Leafkit. As an apprentice, Squirrelpaw was mentored by Dustpelt. While her sister was calm and patient, Squirrelpaw was independent, stubborn, brave, and fiercely passionate, which often got her into trouble. She followed Brambleclaw on the journey to the sun-drown place, where the two grew close. When the Clans arrived at their new home by the lake, she was given her warrior name, Squirrelflight. She became mates with Brambleclaw, much to her close friend Ashfur's dismay. Unbeknownst to the rest of the Clan, Leafpool gave birth to Crowfeather's kits, and Squirrelflight protected her sister by raising the kits as her own. She and Brambleclaw raised Lionblaze, Jayfeather, and Hollyleaf; however, after the truth was revealed, Brambleclaw was furious about being lied to, and the two broke up. Squirrelflight also mentored Foxleap and Rosepetal. After the battle against the Dark Forest, Brambleclaw became leader and appointed Squirrelflight as his deputy as a display of forgiveness. Following the Great Storm, Squirrelflight mentored Stormcloud, a former kittypet. She and Bramblestar eventually had kits of their own: Alderkit, Sparkkit, Juniperkit, and Dandelionkit, though only Alderheart and Sparkpelt survived to adulthood. Squirrelflight eventually came at odds with Bramblestar when she defended the Sisters from ThunderClan and was almost killed by a rockslide. StarClan allowed her body to heal, but Leafpool stayed in StarClan, and died. After Bramblestar's unexpected death, Squirrelflight took over his duties but she relinquished them when he was revived. When she discovered Bramblestar was being possessed, she was exiled by the false leader and took refuge in ShadowClan. After deposing the impostor, Squirrelflight rejoined ThunderClan and became its acting leader, which drew conflict from the Clan as she did not have nine lives. She revealed Ashfur as the identity of the impostor, and struggled to keep her Clan together, advocating for the return of Bramblestar's spirit. However, she somberly accepted his permanent disappearance, but Ashfur kidnapped Squirrelflight through the Moonpool, bringing her to the Place of No Stars, where she learned that Ashfur planned to destroy the Clans in the name of his love for her. With the help of Rootspring and Shadowsight, Squirrelflight and Bramblestar returned to the living world, and Ashfur was eventually defeated. Squirrelflight continued to serve as Bramblestar's deputy until he decided to step down from leadership, rising as Squirrelstar with Ivypool as her deputy.History Looking for a longer overview? And when we come back empty-pawed, maybe you'll admit that I was right." ―Squirrelpaw to Brambleclaw Midnight, page 16 Squirrelpaw is a ThunderClan apprentice, and one of the daughters of Firestar, the Clan leader, and Sandstorm. She is mentored by Dustpelt and is stubborn and independent, often doing what she believes is right even if it is against her mentor's wishes. She and her sister, Leafpaw, share a very close connection and have the ability to know what each other are feeling. She discovers that Brambleclaw is leaving on a journey to find Midnight, and convinces him to let her join, to which he reluctantly agrees. The two ThunderClan cats set out on their journey with Feathertail, Stormfur, Tawnypelt, and Crowpaw. Squirrelpaw earns their respect with her courage, and her connection with Leafpaw is used to recount the herbs to help heal Tawnypelt's infected rat bite. After hearing Midnight's message, the six cats return home and she helps lead the Clans on the Great Journey to the lake territories. Firestar rewards her with her warrior name, Squirrelflight, for her courage and service to the Clans. While the Clans settle into their new territories, Brambleclaw becomes very close to his half-brother, Hawkfrost. Squirrelflight distrusts Hawkfrost and their relationship greatly, and after multiple arguments with Brambleclaw, they break up. She finds comfort in her friend, Ashfur, though she does not reciprocate the romantic feelings he has for her. When Brambleclaw saves Firestar from a fox trap set by Hawkfrost, she grows to trust Brambleclaw again, becoming mates shortly after. Power of Three "Kill them, then. You won't hurt me that way. If you really want to hurt me, you'll have to find a better way than that. When her milk does not come, Ferncloud nurses the kits. She and her family journey to assist the Tribe in the mountains, and Squirrelflight eventually mentors Foxpaw as her first apprentice. Ashfur never forgives her for choosing Brambleclaw over him, and he confronts her in a fire and threatens to kill her kits as revenge, but Squirrelflight reveals that Jayfeather, Lionblaze and Hollyleaf are not her kits. They were originally born to Leafpool and Crowfeather, but she had raised them to hide her sister's secret. Despite Squirrelflight and Leafpool's wishes, Hollyleaf reveals the truth at a Gathering. Brambleclaw is furious that he was lied to, cutting ties with Squirrelflight. Omen of the Stars "Brambleclaw, I'm sorry. You have to understand that I never intended to hurt you. I loved you, and was proud to raise these kits with you. You were a wonderful father. […] Don't throw away everything just because you are angry with me!" ―Squirrelflight to Brambleclaw The Last Hope, page 201 Squirrelflight's second apprentice, Rosepetal, has become a warrior. Brambleclaw still has not forgiven Squirrelflight, and things remain tense and awkward between the two. Squirrelflight spends her time with her sister, who stepped down from her medicine cat duties, and tries to earn her adopted kits' forgiveness. She still cares for Lionblaze and Jayfeather, despite them wanting nothing to do with her. Squirrelflight is chosen to once again journey to the Tribe, and she comforts Jayfeather when he is accused of murdering Flametail. After the Great Battle, Brambleclaw becomes leader and appoints Squirrelflight to be his deputy as a display of forgiveness. A Vision of Shadows "You know as well as I do, that a medicine-cat apprentice has to be just the right cat." ―Squirrelflight to Jayfeather The Apprentice's Quest, page 69 Squirrelflight and Bramblestar have a litter of kits, Alderkit, Sparkkit, Dandelionkit, and Juniperkit. Juniperkit and Dandelionkit die shortly after they are born, but Alderkit and Sparkkit grow up to be a medicine cat and warrior respectively. Squirrelflight is protective of her two surviving kits, but allows them to journey to find SkyClan. She participates in the battle to drive out Darktail and the Kin, and welcomes SkyClan to the lake. The Broken Code Squirrelflight: "I'm not going along with any of this." Ashfur: "Don't be mouse-brained. It will all be worth it when I control the forest and StarClan. We can be together, and I'll forgive you for betraying me to the Clans." Squirrelflight: "Never!" Ashfur: "But you must see that I'm the better choice. Right now, with all the power I have over the Dark Forest and StarClan, I may be the most powerful cat who ever lived!" Squirrelflight: "Powerful? The sort of power you had in ThunderClan, where you turned cats against you and provoked a battle where so many of them died? That's not a power I want any part of. Power is inspiring cats to want to follow you—like Bramblestar did." Ashfur: "Bramblestar is lost and defeated. He couldn't even find his way back to his body to reclaim his next life." Squirrelflight: "Oh, shut up! I'm not listening to your rambling anymore. I'm going to find a way back through the Moonpool—alone, if I have to." Ashfur: "After all this, why would you still choose Bramblestar over me?" Squirrelflight: "Don't you understand, fur-for-brains? This isn't about Bramblestar—although I do choose my own mate, thank you. You could be the only cat left in the world, and I still wouldn't choose you, not after everything you've done. […] Are you ready to fight me? Because that's what you'll have to do, if you want to stop me." Ashfur: "No, I don't want to harm you. I still love you." —Squirrelflight and Ashfur within the Dark Forest The Place of No Stars, pages 178-179 Squirrelflight takes over Bramblestar's duties as he falls ill, and when he dies, she is overcome with grief, refusing to take up leadership. When he is revived, she is overjoyed, returning to her position as deputy. She later becomes suspicious of the way her mate is acting towards the codebreakers. When Rootpaw and Bristlefrost tell her that Bramblestar is a ghost and ThunderClan's leader is an impostor, she tries to inform the other Clans, but her plot is discovered by the impostor, who exiles her. Squirrelflight goes to ShadowClan and informs Tigerstar, who allows her to stay in ShadowClan until the impostor is dealt with. She helps lead the exiled cats, and is heavily adamant about keeping the impostor alive until Bramblestar can be restored to his body. She also fakes her death to make the impostor stop looking for her. During the battle for ShadowClan, she leads the rebels into battle, and upon seeing her, the impostor is subdued and defeated by Tigerstar. Squirrelflight then becomes ThunderClan's acting leader, choosing Lionblaze as her deputy. At a Gathering, after contemplating the impostor's actions and personality, she realizes his true identity as Ashfur, coming back as vengeance for choosing Bramblestar over himself. Squirrelflight's authority is challenged by some of her Clanmates who question the nepotism present in the Clan's leadership lineage, and pressure her to give up on Bramblestar. After the Sisters discover the spirits of their fallen Clanmates in pain and agony with no sign of Bramblestar, the Clan leaders decide to murder Ashfur in Bramblestar's body. Rootspring and Bristlefrost comfort her as she accepts her mate's death, but while seeking comfort at the Moonpool, Ashfur escapes from ShadowClan's prison and kidnaps Squirrelflight through the Moonpool, entering the spirit realm. Lionblaze succeeds her as acting leader, though his leadership falls apart as the Clan falls into further turmoil, and Graystripe takes over instead. Ashfur attempts to convince Squirrelflight to be with him, and even has her mate's possessed spirit attack her when she refuses Ashfur's affections, but Squirrelflight remains firm in her choice of mate and further condemns Ashfur for all that he has done. Shadowsight distracts Ashfur for both Bramblestar and Squirrelflight to escape, and Rootspring and Snowtuft later help Bramblestar reunite with his body. Squirrelflight and Bramblestar escape the Dark Forest and return to the living world. She resumes her deputy duties, and requests Graystripe to deliver a message to Ashfur from her that she never loved him and will only love Bramblestar. After Ashfur's death, Squirrelflight mourns Graystripe's death and welcomes Bramblestar's return.
