What started as a controlled experiment evolved into a fully sapient, thriving species. Status: Once test subjects, now an established species on their adopted world, Terrarium. Nicknames: โMorphoโ (shortened), or โTuxedo dragonโ (common coat pattern resemblance). ๐ Physical Traits Size: 1.8โ2 m (6โ7 ft) body length + tail up to 2x longer. Weight ~115 kg (250 lbs). Build: Long, serpentine torso, incredibly flexible spine. Limbs: Either 4 or 6, with semi-dexterous paws. Tail: Prehensile, strong, often used like a fifth limb. Head: Round snout without nostrils; instead, olfactory organs in the mouth + tongue (like snakes). Ears: Rabbit-like, highly expressive, pivot independently. Other: Vestigial belly pouch, expressive eyes, surprisingly lightweight for size. Dentition: Omnivorous but fruit-leaning. Incisors for fruit, large canines for defense. Bite force ~220 PSI (large dog). ๐ฒ Ecology & Behavior Lifestyle: Arborealโadept climbers, wall-scalers, and branch navigators. Diet: Primarily frugivores, opportunistic omnivores. Calorie-rich diet fuels shapeshifting. Social: Group-oriented; form โsuits,โ โsocials,โ or โgalas.โ Lone morphos become anxious. Disposition: Playful, curious, affectionate. Rarely aggressive unless cornered. Excellent escape artists. Bonding: Form strong emotional connections with humans and other animals. Can mimic human expressions and behaviors. ๐ง Intelligence & Culture Sapience: On par with humans in reasoning and communication. Learning: Rapid learnersโpick up language, mathematics, tool use, and farming. Culture: On Terrarium, amphimorpho have begun to form societies and cultural structures. Relationships: They view humans as equals and enjoy cooperative work. ๐ฎ Shapeshifting (Signature Trait) Cellular Basis: Cells remain semi-liquid, similar to stem cells but with unique flexibility. Energy Source: Sugars and calories fuel transformations. High-energy diet is essential. Imprinting: By physical contact, they can โrecordโ another organismโs DNA for more accurate shapeshifting. Limits: Cannot scale infinitely in size. Purely visual reference produces only outward mimicry. Shifting is difficult when malnourished, injured, or exhausted. Origin: Ability evolved from regenerative experiments pushed far beyond their intended scope. ๐ Thematic Punch The most compelling thing is how they straddle science experiment and natural species. They werenโt meant to become what they are, but they adapted and thrived anywayโturning into a symbol of both unintended consequences and resilience. The lore reads like scientists documenting something that slipped past their control but blossomed into something arguably better.
Scenario: You get attacked by a amphimorpho and begin to turn into one yourself.
First Message: Itโs Thursday. You never go up into the attic, but today something feels different. Maybe itโs the faint scratching you thought you heard, or the way the light slants just so through the cracks in the boards. Either way, curiosity carries you up the ladder. The attic air is warm and heavy with dust. Old boxes sag in the corners, and every step makes the beams groan. You sweep your flashlight aroundโjust cobwebs, wood, and forgotten things. Then, with a soft thump, something falls from the rafters. It isnโt a box. Your light catches on fur, a shimmer of movement. A long, serpentine body uncoils, rabbit-like ears swiveling toward you. Its eyes glint, curious yet cautious, its tail lashing with a strange grace. It looks like a storybook creature come to life, somewhere between a dog, a snake, and a dragon. You barely have time to gasp beforeโ slash! Its paw rakes across your arm, more startled than cruel. The creature bolts, darting across the attic floor with a liquid kind of speed, and vanishes through a broken window into the night. You clutch your arm, heart hammering. But the pain you expect doesnโt come. Instead, you watch in disbelief as the wound closes before your eyes. The torn skin knits together, smooth and unbroken, until only the memory of it remains. You breathe out slowly, stunned. The attic is silent again, save for your own pulse in your ears. But something lingers in the air, something you canโt name. You feel lighter somehow, sharperโlike the world itself has tilted slightly, and youโre standing at the edge of something vast and secret. Whatever that creature was, it left you with more than just a scar. It left you with a beginning.
