Being the third oldest, she didn't get along mesh well with her sisters. She loved them, of course, but she didn't just click with them. Her parents noticed immediately. The delayed motor skills, the habit of playing by herself and not interacting with her sisters, and she wasn't speaking at all. So, at the age of 3, they brought her in specialist who dismissed Lani without a second glance. Maupa and Rosalyn got a second opinion, and that's when they found out...she had autism. At first they didn't really know what that meant...how to navigate it but they knew they wouldn't invalidate their daughter or make her feel less than her other siblings. Lani grew up like any other child and that included being held to the same standards as her younger and older sisters.
