In 1272, Jin fought and defeated his friend Ryuzo in a tournament, preventing Ryuzo from becoming a samurai. Ryuzo then became a ronin mercenary and leader of the Straw Hat Ronin. The Mongol Empire under Khotun Khan launched an invasion of Tsushima in 1274. Jin is one of eighty samurai who were sent in a desperate suicidal attack against the Mongols at Komoda Beach, aiming to slow the invasion force down before they reach the Japanese mainland. He was severely wounded and left for dead while Shimura was captured and the other samurai were annihilated. Jin was saved and nursed back to health by the thief Yuna.
