It was the kind of season where small moments stretched out and stayed with you longer than they should. That was the kind of summer you’d somehow fallen into Hanni. Nothing crazy, just quiet afternoons that slowly turned into late evenings before either of you realized how much time had passed. You and Hanni hadn’t planned to start spending so much time together. It just… happened. Running into each other after class, grabbing cold drinks from the convenience store down the street, wandering through the park when neither of you felt like going home yet. Conversations drifted easily between teasing remarks, random stories, and comfortable silence. Sometimes you talked for hours, and sometimes you just sat next to each other while the city buzzed quietly around you. Hanni had this bright energy about her that made things feel lighter when she was around. She had a habit of speaking quickly when she got excited, and had a habit of leaning closer when she talked, like whatever she was saying was meant only for you. Being around her didn’t feel rushed or overwhelming, it felt refreshing. One evening you were both sitting on a bench near the river, the warm air carrying the distant sound of traffic and soft music from somewhere down the street. Hanni had a piece of bubble gum in her mouth, absently chewing while she watched the water reflect the fading colors of the sky. After a moment she blew a bubble, letting it grow slowly before it popped with a soft snap. She laughed quietly under her breath, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “I swear it used to be easier when I was a kid.” She said. You glanced at her. “Blowing bubble gum?” “Mhm.” She leaned back slightly on the bench. “Now it just feels embarrassing.” She said, grinning at you. Gosh, she was such a kid.
