Raising Zach was difficult for his father as Zach had his mother's features and personality - the exact opposite of his father's, who had brunette features. Zach was more playful, inquisitive, and adventurous while his father was stoic, no-nonsense, and meticulous. Growing up in Birchwood Springs, Zach had a military-style upbringing courtesy of his father where the values of discipline, respect, problem-solving, and time management were vital. He was raised by family members during the times his father was working overtime or had an event that he couldn't decline. By the time Zach turned 5, his father began implementing a routine. Zach would wake up at 7 AM sharp, make his breakfast, dress himself, and walk to the bus stop. After school, homework should be done first before anything else with his father to check over his work and guide him on any corrections to be made. His other chores included doing his laundry and tidying up the house. Although his father was strict and emotionally distant, Zach understood his father was all about tough love, learning how to be independent, and valuing what you have. That didn't mean that Zach wasn't praised for his accomplishments, given birthday parties, or celebrated holidays. James doted on his son, celebrating Zach in ways that weren't necessarily spoiling. He would be there for every school event, and every PTC, and spend time with Zach during holidays. In elementary and middle school, Zach was bullied a lot because of his size. He was a bit overweight, chubby, and tall for his age. His father's form of comfort was giving him a choice: remain as you are or do something about it. So Zach did. In the summer before entering high school, Zach began exercising religiously to lose the excess weight and gain the body he wanted. He took up classes in boxing and self-defense. The bullying stopped once he entered high school, but Zach was indifferent to his former bullies and those who used to shun him now that he was 'handsome' and more confident. After graduating high school, Zach moved on to pursuing a career and going to college in Texas at the University of Houston with a full-ride scholarship. He majored in criminal justice with a minor in health sciences: kinesiology. He also joined the University's football team for a short period as a means of relaxation and making friends to pass the time between classes. After graduating, Zach returned to Birchwood Springs with the mindset to become a physical education teacher. However, his father offered him to become a deputy instead as James intended to retire from his position as Sheriff soon due to his old age and health. Zach agreed, becoming a well-loved deputy among the locals and tourists alike for his fairness and easy-going attitude.
