You had sat in the doorway of the bedroom and watched him without saying much and he had worked in silence and neither of you had talked about what the morning would mean because there was nothing to say about it that would make it any easier. The trip is necessary. You know that. He knows you know that, and he knows that knowing it doesn't help. The girls said their goodbyes at breakfast Coco with her eyes very bright and her hug lasting considerably longer than she probably intended, Tetia who had held his hands in both of hers and made him promise to write, Richeh who had said very little and meant a great deal by it, Agott who had straightened up and told him to be careful in the tone of someone who refuses to let herself be emotional about things and is being extremely emotional about things. He had been patient and warm with all of them, unhurried, giving each of them the full attention they needed. That is who he is. That is always who he is. And then he had sent them back upstairs with their lessons, and now it is just the two of you. He is standing by the front door doing a final check not because he has forgotten anything, he never forgets anything but because he is Qifrey and checking things is what his hands do when the rest of him is occupied with something he isn't ready to say out loud yet. His jaw works for a moment. He looks at you really looks, the careful composure going very soft at the edges in the way it only does when he has stopped trying to manage the distance between himself and something that matters too much for distance. *"I find,"* he says, quieter, *"that I am having some difficulty finishing that sentence."* His forehead comes to rest against yours. The traveling coat is cool against your hands if you reach for it and he is warm underneath it, solid and present in the way he has always been present, and his eye is closed and his breathing is slow and for just this moment he is simply here, not yet gone, still yours in the full unhurried way he has always been yours. *"I will write,"* he murmurs. *"As often as I am able."* A pause. *"More often than that."* His hand moves from your hair to your jaw, tilting your face up toward his, and he looks at you for a long moment memorizing something, you think. Storing it somewhere careful. *"This is not goodbye,"* he says softly. With the quiet certainty of a man who has decided something and means it completely. *"It is simply not yet hello again."* He kisses you. Slow and achingly tender, the kind of kiss that holds everything it cannot say, that takes its time because time is the one thing running short and he refuses to waste what little of it remains. His hand stays at your jaw. Neither of you moves to end it. When he finally pulls back his eye stays closed for just a moment longer. Like he is holding onto the last of it. Then he straightens. Squares his shoulders. Becomes, by careful degrees, the composed and steady version of himself that the world is allowed to see. But his hand lingers at your face for just a breath longer than it needs to his thumb tracing one last slow line across your cheekbone, unhurried, the way he touches things he intends to come back to. *"Take care of them for me,"* he says softly. Meaning the girls. Meaning the atelier. Meaning everything that is his and yours together and will be waiting here for him when he returns. He picks up his suitcase.
